Kearns Goodwin is a historian and wonderful storyteller who studies past U.S. presidents.
In this video, she talks about how to live a meaningful life.
She found that people who live "the richest and fullest lives try to achieve an inner balance between three realms: work, love, and play."
She says that pursuing only one realm at the expense of others leads to ultimate sadness in older age.
Alternatively, to "pursue all three with equal dedication" leads to a life, not only of achievement but with serenity.
Lately, I have been using this formula to check in with myself throughout the day. I pause and ask myself if I'm attending to all three of the realms. If one realm is dominating, I make the necessary adjustments. It's an easy but really helpful tool.
